200 kids awaitassessment

OVER 200 children were awaiting referral to an educational psychologist for special needs assessment at the start of the month, Education Minister John O’Dowd has advised.

This was higher than in each of the past four years rising from 136 in October 2008 through 132 in 2009; 172 in 2010; and 195 in 2011.

Mr O’Dowd revealed that 203 children were awaiting assessment at October 1, 2012.

The Minister explained: “The initial referral of a child to an educational psychologist will, in almost all cases, take place at Stage 3 of the Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs.”
