25 suspected burglars charged since August

POLICE have arrested and charged 25 people in relation to burglary offences since Operation Safer Homes started back in August.

Forty people have been arrested in connection with burglary or breach of bail conditions.

Inspector Jon Burrows says he is encouraged by the results but concerned that homes are still vulnerable to opportunistic criminals.

"We are still concerned about the number of walk-in burglaries – too many residents are leaving doors and windows open or unlocked, especially at night time.

"This makes it all too easy for someone to enter your home while you are sleeping or out at work and rifle though your belongings.

"In the past few months we have seen an increase in the number of laptops stolen from homes, especially in the Eglinton and Northland Road area.

"These high value items are easy to carry and easy to sell on, making the criminals a quick profit.

"While we do not want residents in those areas to be overly concerned we are asking that you make sure doors and windows are locked and valuable items kept out of view."

Police say they will continue to address the issue of burglary through targeted patrolling and raising awareness of crime prevention however the community also has a part to play.

The PSNI are asking people to look out for neighbours, review security measures regularly and report suspicious activity immediately to Strand Road or a member of your local Neighbourhood Policing Team – details can be found on the PSNI website.
