27k in ROI applied to be British

ALMOST 30,000 people living in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) applied to be British over the past three years, the Sentinel has learned.

The equivalent of the population of Ballymena applied for UK status through the British embassy in Dublin between 2009 and 2011.

A total of 27,361 British passports were issued through the Passport Section of the embassy over the three years.

Applicants applying for UK passports from within the Irish Republic must apply to the British embassy in Dublin.
