297 burglars convicted in two years

HUNDREDS of burglars were convicted in Londonderry between 2002 and 2006 - the highest number outside North Belfast.

One hundred and forty two people were convicted of burglary in a dwelling; one hundred and twenty six people were convicted of burglary in a non dwelling; and seventeen people were convicted of other burglary offences over the five year period.

Twelve people were also convicted of going equipped to carry out a burglary in Londonderry during the same timeframe - bringing the total of burglary convictions here to 297.

Justice Minister David Ford outlined the statistics in response to a query tabled at the Stormont Assembly.
