3.1pc drop in reported crimes for Magherafelt

There was a 3.1 per cent drop in the number of crimes reported to police in the Magherafelt area in the 2013/14 financial year, figures released by the PSNI reveal.

With 1,,497 incidents reported, there were 48 fewer victims of crime, Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan, the Area Commander, said.

He added: “We saw reductions in the number of incidents of violence, down by 65, burglary, down by 23, and criminal damage, down by 29.

“Magherafelt achieved the second highest outcome rates at an area level in Northern Ireland with 36.7%.

“The number of drugs offences also reduced, by 15. We know there are issues with drugs in the area and we will continue to tackle them robustly. We know drugs abuse is an issue that is a priority for communities also.”
