Three thousand former police are to receive a pension top up after the Pensions Ombudsman ruled there was an error in calculating pay outs for members of the Police Pension Scheme who retired between December 1, 2001 and November 30, 2006.

The Justice Minister David Ford explained: “I understand that the PSNI received a bulk calculation facility from the Government Actuary Department at the end of August.

“With almost 3,000 former police officers potentially affected, the PSNI envisage that, once calculated, it may take six to eight months to pay all those affected. I am advised that payment will be made based on the date of retirement from December 1, 2001 forward.”

The pay out concerns commutation, which is the exchange of part, or all, of an annual pension for a cash lump sum at retirement.

The Ombudsman ruled that the rate at which this exchange was made for the 2001 and 2006 period should have been altered.
