45 workers fearful after contract lost

WORKERS at a Londonderry maintenance firm are concerned for their future after the firm lost a contract with North and West Housing Association (NWHA).

It is feared that up to 45 jobs could be lost at McGurk and Moore after a maintenance contract accounting for the majority of their employment was awarded to rival firm Omega.

Kevin Barrett, the facilities manager with McGurk and Moore, said the company has written to the preferred bidder to try and keep the jobs open. The company believes the jobs can still be saved.

North and West Housing said its maintenance contract was put out to tender under EU rules and awarded to a different company.

SDLP Waterside Councillor Martin Reilly said: “I have been contacted by a number of employees unhappy at a lack of clarification regarding the future of their jobs.

“McGurk & Moore lost a maintenance contract from North and West Housing to OMEGA and there is confusion as to whether these employees will be made redundant or will be taken on by the new contactor OMEGA.

“I have been in contact with McGurk & Moore, OMEGA, North and West Housing and the Derry Trades Council concerning the ongoing confusion and in order to clarify matters.

“This is understandably a difficult time for all of the employees who just want to know what their future holds.”
