47 people made jobless this year

A STAGGERING 47 people have been made redundant in Ballymoney so far this year, depressing new figures have revealed.

According to the Statistics Research of the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment, there have been 1,770 confirmed redundancies throughout Northern Ireland to April 30, 2011. Of these, 498 or 28% were in the manufacturing sector and 300 in the Construction sector.

Meanwhile in Ballymoney and Moyle, there were also a total of 83 more people unemployed compared with last year,

The statistics show that, out of the two council areas, Ballymoney suffered the most from the economic downturn by registering a 7.4% rise in the number of people claiming unemployment benefit.

The figures illustrate that in April 2011 there were 1,007 people without a job in Ballymoney Borough, a rise of 69 on the same month in 20010. It was also revealed by the Statistics Research of the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment that 5.2% of the jobless people were of working age.

Of the 1,007 people in Ballymoney Borough, 759 are males and 248 females.

However the number of people unemployed in the Ballymoney Borough decreased by 2.5%, or 26, compared to the jobless total for March 2011.

Meanwhile in the Moyle Council area they reported a jobless rise of 2.2% between April 20010 and 2011 - up 14 to 639 people.

Of these 6.0% were of working age with 471 being men and 168 females.

The number of people unemployed in the Moyle increased by 3.0%, or 20, compared to the jobless total for the previous month.

Unfortunately Moyle is one of only two councils to have unemployment below 1,000.

* The newly released figures also revealed that in the last 12 months there were no redundancies in Moyle.
