512 wait for cataract surgery

FIVE hundred and twelve people were waiting for cataract surgery in the Western Trust at the end of June - the highest number in Northern Ireland outside Belfast.

Four patients were waiting for up to six months, which was the highest amount in Northern Ireland outside Belfast where 50 patients were waiting for between 21 and 26 weeks.

Seventy nine patients waited between 13 and 21 weeks; 191 between six and 13 weeks; and 238 between zero and six weeks.

Health Minister Edwin Poots provided the details for the number of patients waiting for cataract surgery in each Health and Social Care Trust, and the length of time they were waiting at June 30, 2011, in response to an Assembly Question.
