60% of Foyle hatecrimes a result of sectarianism

Sectarianism was the motivating factor behind 60 per cent of all hate crimes recorded in Londonderry in 2014/15, according to a new analysis of the Foyle constituency carried out by Assembly researchers.

Twenty-five per cent of hate crimes here were racist in motivation, the researchers reported.

And 14 per cent of all hate crimes in the Londonderry area were committed by homophobes.

There were 153 hate crimes recorded in the city.

“In 2014/15, there were 22 offences with a homophobic motivation, 39 offences with a racist motivation and 92 offences with a sectarian motivation recorded in Foyle,” the researchers recorded.
