Six hundred pensioners on the waiting list for the Mayor’s Senior Citizens’ Christmas Concert will have to wait until the New Year for their festive entertainment.

With 12,000 residents eligible to attend the annual show and only 800 seats available in total for the two scheduled performances, the tickets were quickly snapped up, leaving literally hundreds of elderly people disappointed.

When the dilemma was highlighted to Councillors at an October committee meeting Cllr Beth Adger described the situation as “a disgrace” and members joined her in calling on Council officers to come up with possible solutions.

At their November monthly meeting, last Monday night, two alternatives were tabled.

On the proposal of Cllr Beth Adger, seconded by Cllr James McClean it was agreed that Council provide two shows, similar to those already planned, in the New Year at a cost of £5,500, including transport plus complimentary sweets and ice-cream.

“This is what they wanted in the first place,” said Mrs Adger.

The other option was to purchase seats at the Christmas Pantomime in The Braid at a cost of £4,500 to £5,000 which would also have included transport and free refreshments.
