‘62,000 people in borough and not one hospital bed’

BALLYMENA Councillors have ‘placed on record’ their total, cross-party, opposition to the closure of wards, relocation of staff and cessation of new patient admissions at The Braid Valley by the Northern Trust.

Angry that this will leave the borough without a single hospital bed to call its own, they have unanimously pledged to push on for a speedy replacement of health services at the site on Cushendall road via the establishment of the long-awaited Ballymena Health and Social Care Centre.

Details of the decisions by Northern Trust were contained in a press release which was presented to councillors at their latest monthly meeting, last Monday night.

Council’s Chief Executive, Anne Donaghy confirmed at that forum that Council had, indeed, clearly set out to the Northern Trust some time ago their request that the Braid Valley services should not be removed until such times as a suitable alternative could be made available for the borough.

Alderman PJ McAvoy stated that, in the meantime, “There are 62,000 people in this borough and not one hospital bed!”
