67% WELB SENreports delayed

Sixty-seven per cent of special needs statements for children in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) over 2012/13 took longer than the timeframe recommended in the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice.

But WELB says the delayed assessments were all valid exceptions.

Under the SEN code statements must be completed within 20 weeks.

The Board stated: “In WELB, 67 per cent of statements ran over the SEN Code of Practice during the years 2012 and 2013, as a result of the valid exceptions detailed below; further advice needed; late advice from parents; school holidays; local health authority or social services delay; personal circumstances; child or parent absent; missed appointment.”
