69% in receiptof state aid

A HUGE amount of people living in Northern Ireland will be affected by benefits cuts with 991,1760 claimants aged over 16 receiving one benefit or another, the Sentinel can reveal.

Across Northern Ireland there were 266,010 people claiming the dole; 300,940 claiming state pensions; 116,910 claiming pension credits; 190,790 claiming Disability Living Allowance (DLA); 55,810 claiming Attendance Allowance; and 61,300 claiming carer’s allowance at August 2012.

The Department of Social Development (DSD) provided the Sentinel with the latest figures available demonstrating that out of 1,430,611 living in NI over the age of 16, 991,760 (69 per cent) were in receipt of some form of state aid.

In terms of dole claimants alone there were 266,010 claimants although not all of those whole claimed, received.

The DSD told the Sentinel the number of Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants was 62,160 but the number of Jobseeker’s Allowance recipients was just 58,160.

The number of Employment and Support Allowance claimants was 49,830 and the number of Employment and Support Allowance recipients was 45,990.

The number of Incapacity Benefit claimants was 61,410 and the number of Incapacity Benefit recipients was 38,090.

The number of Severe Disablement Allowance claimants was 10,080 and the number of Severe Disablement Allowance recipients was 9,860.
