7 admissions for ME in WHSCT

JUST seven people were admitted to hospital with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) last year in the Western Trust - the second lowest number in Northern Ireland after the Northern Trust (4 admissions).

There were 54 admissions in Belfast; 30 in the South Eastern Trust; and 24 in the Southern Trust.

SDLP MLA Mark H. Durkan asked the Health Minister Mr Poots to outline the number of patients with ME by Trust area at the Assembly.

“It should be noted that any individual could have been admitted to hospital more than once during any given time period and would therefore be counted more than once in the above figures,” stated Mr Poots in reply.

Treatment for those people living with ME is, for the most part, provided by general practitioners; however, patients (both adults and children) have access to a wide range of care and support services in primary, secondary and community settings, including specialist medical, paediatric, neurology and mental health services,” he stated.
