70 nurseriesand crèches located in city

THERE are almost 70 nursery, daycare and crèche facilities in Londonderry despite the fact over 300 children failed to secure their first choice nursery school places in the city this year, it’s emerged.

The Londonderry area has 13 day nurseries; 17 out of schools facilities; 19 crèches; and 20 playgroups - in total 69 facilities.

Health Minister Edwin Poots revealed the provision in response to an Assembly Question tabled by SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey.

It follows Education Minister John O’Dowd’s revelation last month that over 300 children failed to secure fist choice nursery places this year.

Last month Mr O’Dowd said 16 children remained unplaced as their parents declined to nominate further preferences.
