700 people attend Larne Job Fair

The first in a series of Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) Job Fairs was held in Larne last Thursday, featuring a range of careers.

The event in Larne Town Hall was organised by the Department in conjunction with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and LEDCOM.

Siobhan McManus, DEL employment service manager of Larne Jobs and Benefits office, said: “The Department recognises the important contribution which employers, large and small, have made to this event. DEL is seeking to work with local businesses as equal partners to grow our economy.

“Events such as this bring local employers, support organisations and jobseekers together under one roof. The Job Fair gives employers the opportunity to meet potential employees, many of whom are very highly skilled. It also provides the jobseekers with the chance to meet face to face with employers.”

More than 20 employers were in attendance and over 700 jobseekers attended the event. Advice and guidance was also available on a range of training and re-skilling opportunities.

Major employers with jobs and apprenticeships available included BT Flex, PwC and the Wright Group. Other local companies exhibiting included Kilwaughter Chemical, Larne Care Centre, Londonderry Arms Hotel, P&O Ferries and Dominos Pizza.

Siobhan said: “A range of support organisations, including DEL’s Careers Service, Disability Employment Service and Employment Service, were also present to provide individuals with information, advice and guidance on a range of training and employment schemes.”

David Gillespie from LEDCOM commented “The Job Fair gave local employers the opportunity to interact with potential applicants and allows their recruitment to be more effective. This event demonstrates that DEL, local employers, councils, economic development agencies and training organisations are working together to help jobseekers find the most appropriate route back into employment and assist employers recruit a skilled work force.”
