78 special schools pupils travelling without vetted adult

SEVENTY-EIGHT pupils are currently transported to special schools in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) without a vetted escort.

Education Minister Caitrona Ruane revealed the details in response to a query tabled by Foyle MLA Mark Durkan.

She advised that during the last financial year 2009/10 sixty-eight pupils were transported to special schools in WELB by taxi, 38 by private hire bus; and the vast majority (567) by board bus.

Mr Durkan asked the Minister how many children are currently being transported to special schools by taxi without a vetted adult. She advised the figure was 78.

She explained: "The Education and Library's policy states that 'escorts are provided, where required, to ensure the safety of children on the recommendation of the Designated Special Education Officer.'

"As a contractual requirement, all private hire contractors must only supply personnel who have been Access NI checked.

"All escorts when present and drivers are also subject to an enhanced Access NI criminal record check."
