850 invited toSt Columb’s Pkcampsite event

ALMOST one thousand residents of the Waterside have been invited to a public information sharing session to receive an update on the proposed campervan and camping facilities at St Columb’s Park on December 12, 2012.

In October the Sentinel revealed how a former British army helipad used to airlift soldiers in and out of Londonderry during the Troubles was being lined up as a campsite for visiting revellers and musicians attending the UK City of Culture Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann and other events next year.

The Sentinel subsequently reported how over 300 concerned residents of the Waterside signed a petition against the proposed campsite.

Now invitations have been issued to over 850 residents in the immediate catchment area, identified as all streets adjoining the Limavady Road from Bonds Street as far as the Caw roundabout, to attend the open consultation meeting at St Columb’s Park House between 10am until 8pm.

John Kelpie Strategic Director, Derry City Council at a recent Environmental Service meeting said the session would offer a chance for all members of the public to view the plans for the facility which will be on display.

He said: “A planning application has been submitted earlier this year to develop a site adjacent to St Columb’s Park to cater for both campervans and camping in order to ensure an adequate and varied supply of accommodation in 2013.

“To keep the public informed of the status of the application and development, Council is inviting all interested parties to attend this day-long event. The session is designed to offer residents an opportunity to meet officers to discuss the plans in detail.”

The formal planning application was lodged with the Planning Service in August 2012 for 32 designated sites for campervans and camping facilities at St. Columbs Park.
