Area Commander John Magill said: “It has been shown that in the three months since the last report in November, 259 crimes have been reported in Ballymoney. The total number of crimes in the period April to December 2009 was 853.

“When compared to the same period last year this represents an increase of 15 crimes, up 1.8% on last year’s figure of 838. Increases have occurred in offences against the person, criminal damage, theft and offences against the state with reductions in burglary, robbery, fraud and forgery and other notiifiable offences.

“The clearance rate has reduced from the six month report figure of 18.4% to the current figure of 16% for the period April to December 2009. When this is compared against the April to December 2008 figure it gives a decrease in the clearance rate of 1.7% on last years figure of 17.7%.”

Praising his colleagues and the local community, the police chief continued “My Neighbourhood Policing Team under the leadership of Inspector Anderson continues to work with the community across Ballymoney on numerous matters. Local officers from my neighbourhood policing team and Response continue to be supported by other personnel within H District including CID, Crime Team, Public Protection Unit and Community Safety. This is in addition to support provided by Roads Policing and Tactical Support Group.

“Police need the support of the community in Ballymoney and I would appeal to the community to report any suspicious activity to police and continue to follow some basic crime prevention advice. Free crime prevention advice is available from your local Crime Prevention Officer based at Ballymoney Police Station.

“My Neighbourhood and Response Officers will continue to look out for those driving above the speed limit, the illegal use of mobile phones, careless and dangerous driving, failure to wear seatbelts and those drinking and driving. Roads Policing Units regularly patrol the Ballymoney area and also target these offences.

“Spring and summer normally sees an increase in reports of careless and dangerous driving including “donutting”. All reports of this will be investigated by Police. Those convicted can expect penalty points, a fine or a ban. Please drive safety- for those who refuse to heed this advice, it is only a matter of time before your caught.”
