87 paedophiles housed in Magilligan

THE vast majority of paedophiles in the Northern Ireland Prison Service estate are contained in HMP Magilligan with 87 sentenced child abusers housed in the County Londonderry jail.

NIPS advised there were 87 prisoners serving sentences because of sexual offences against children and young people as at January 11.

This compared to 27 at Maghaberry (20 sentenced, 7 remand) and two at Hydebank Wood (one sentenced, one remand).

The information is contained in a Freedom of Information release last week.

NIPS advised: "There are currently no Female Prisoners held in custody within Northern Ireland Prisons for Sexual Offences against Children and Young People."
