8k speeding tickets

EIGHT thousand fixed penalty notices were issued to speeders in the North West over the past five years.

The statistic was outlined by Justice Minister David Ford in response to an Assembly Question.

He advised 1696 tickets were issued in G District - the PSNI district covering Londonderry, Strabane, Limavady and Magherafelt - in 2005/6. This rose to 1749 in 2006/7; to 1876 in 2007/8; before falling back to the lower levels of 1262 in 2008/9 and 1433 in 2009/10.

Meanwhile, the Minister also revealed that there were 668 convictions for speeding offences in the Foyle area between 2002 and 2006.

The equivalent figure in East Londonderry was 805 and in West Tyrone it was 699.
