900 calls for help

THERE were 900 incidents of domestic violence reported in the Coleraine area from 2009 to 2010.

The worrying point is that there are many more incidents that are not reported.

Northern Ireland statistics show that an incident is reported to police every 21 minutes.

Last week, a joint protocol between Causeway Women’s Aid, ABCLN Women’s Aid and police in ‘H District’ was launched.

The protocol represents the commitment of Women’s Aid and the PSNI to further cement their partnership for improved support for women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Speaking at the launch, Sharon Burnett, Management Coordinator of Causeway Women’s Aid, said “In Northern Ireland the PSNI respond to a domestic Incident every 21 minutes.

“This figure demonstrates the scale of known domestic violence in our society, and highlights the need for those working in this area to ensure that their working practices are coordinated, consistent and have real meaning in women’s lives.”

Sharon went on to say that we all have a role to play in tackling the issue: “ While PSNI and Women’s Aid play key roles in working with domestic violence victims, we all have a role to play in tackling the issue. The 24 hour domestic violence helpline number is 0800 917 141.”
