A decade in See House

THE Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rt Rev Ken Good, celebrated his 10th year as Bishop on June 11.

Reflecting this week on his appointment, he said he found the Diocese both “stimulating” and “exciting”, and spoke of his vision for the future. He also revealed that he found his work “fulfilling”.

At a meeting of the Diocesan Council last week, tribute was paid to the Bishop’s visionary leadership in diocesan and community life.

Bishop Good responded to the good wishes by saying that he is delighted to have been called to serve in this city and community.

“This cross-border diocese is a very stimulating and exciting place to live and to work. There is a great variety of community and church life here in which to get involved, on both sides of the border,” he said.

The Bishop has responsibility for a large geographical area. The diocese of Derry, which extends broadly from Londonderry to Coleraine and down to Omagh, and the Diocese of Raphoe, which includes most of Co Donegal, is a significant area, which includes 120 Church of Ireland churches and over 10,500 Church of Ireland households.

Bishop Good, who grew up in Co Cork, is very optimistic about the future of the city.

“I am in doubt that this city is changing for the better. Bridges of trust are being built, levels of mutual understanding are deepening, the desire to be part of a shared future is growing,” he said, adding: “To be part of this growth in hope and is very exciting. In this job, every day is different and brings its own challenges and opportunities. I love the work I do and find it fruitful and fulfilling.”

The Bishop, who has responsibility for 60 clergy in 50 parish groupings, spoke highly of his clergy: “I very much enjoy engaging with rectors, helping to provide additional focus and vision for what takes place in their parishes. One of the Bishop’s primary roles is to work with the clergy, encouraging them in their ministry and caring for them pastorally.

“Our diocesan focus, Transforming Community Radiating Christ has given a lead in assisting clergy and lay people to develop greater clarity about priorities in parish life,” he siad, adding: “My longing is that parishioners’ faith moves them to become more and more actively involved in their community for the common good.”
