A fascinating history of Hezlett House

Jennifer gave a history of the Hezlett House and its inhabitants from its build in 1691 to present day.

The Hezlett family lived in the house for 200 years from 1776 to 1976 and Jennifer brought the various characters to life.

The Spanish Chestnut tree grows in the grounds and legend has it that one of the early inhabitants - Samuel Hezlett (1753-1821) – was threatened to be hanged from its bows by local United Irishmen supporters!

The House is now owned by The National Trust having acquired the house from Hugh Hezlett in 1976.

Jennifer is a teacher of Geography and Mathematics, an examiner for A Level Geography and a National Irish tourist guide.

Next month’s Coleraine Historical Society talk will take place on Tues 16th Feb 2016 at 7.30pm, at the Sandel Centre venue when guest speaker – biographer, journalist and travel writer - Paul Clements will give a talk entitled ‘The Life of Richard Hayward’

The meeting will take place at The Sandel Centre, 6 Knocklynn Road, Coleraine in the ground floor room.

Paul’s biography ‘Romancing Ireland’ on the travel writer, actor and singer Richard Hayward, was published in 2014 by Lilliput Press and adapted for BBC television. And this is the subject of the talk.

Richard Hayward was a pivotal cultural figure in the middle decades of twentieth-century Ireland. His distinctive presence and unique voice made him one of the most popular singers and actors of his generation. In his writing he explored aspects of Irish cultural history and was a broadcaster and folklorist.
