Lilian Bonnes spoke exclusively to the Londonderry Sentinel on Friday, breaking a four-year silence maintained by the family following Kyle’s death in the River Faughan after he ran from the police.

The inquest into the teenager’s death is expected to last four days and is to take place in Magherafelt starting on April 28.

Far from bringing closure for the family, Lilian says she is bracing herself for more heartbreak and if worried for the mental and emotional health of her husband, William, and her daughter Fiona, Kyle’s mother, who has been unable to speak about her eldest child’s death since it happened.

Tearful at times, Lilian spoke to Olga Bradshaw about how the family had been trying to cope since the tragedy which claimed Kyle’s life.
