A Level results: Personal best for Hazelwood students

Hazelwood Integrated College is celebrating its best ever set of A Level results.

A record 74 per cent of students achieved three or more A* to E grades and 41 per cent of students achieved three or more A Levels at A* to C - up 22 per cent on last year’s results with 36 A* or A grades.

Eighteen out of 22 subjects studied at Post 16 in the Whitewell Road college achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.

The college’s continuing partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College is proving to be extremely successful, with students achieving fantastic results in subjects such as Hospitality & Catering and Creative Media Production.

The English department also achieved an excellent set of results, with 80 per cent of students achieving a grade C or higher in English Literature.

Commending students and staff on the record-breaking results, principal Kathleen O’Hare said: “Among the top achieving academic subjects are English Literature, Environmental Technology, Media Studies, Art and Design and Moving Image Arts, with top marks for the vocational subjects at Advanced Level in Health and Social Care, Public Services, Business Studies, Hospitality and Catering, Creative Media Production, ICT and Sports Studies.

“Hazelwood’s reputation for excellence in educating international students has continued, with students achieving A* to C results at Advanced Level. Many of these students came to us with little English and yet have achieved top grades at Advanced Level. Ralph Santos has achieved top grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics and has secured a place at Queen’s University Belfast studying Biomedical Science.

“Boys have done particularly well this year, with two of our students, Jayson Greenlee and Alfie Gilmore, both achieving three A Levels and securing places at Liverpool John Moores University studying Science with Football.”

Mark Langhammer, Director at Crusaders FC, congratulated the boys by bringing along the Northern Ireland Football League trophy, ‘The Gibson Cup’ to the college on results day.

Mrs O’Hare continued: “Other top performing students include our outgoing Deputy Head Boy, William Jordan who is off to Salford University to study Film Production, Sarah Louise Kidd, who transferred to Hazelwood College for post 16 studies, and will study Criminology & Social Policy at Queen’s University.”

She added: “These are our best results ever and it is a fitting way to end our 30th anniversary year. Well done to all students and staff and as you go on to further fields remember to keep the spirit of Hazelwood alive in your life.”
