A packed month of activities for all at Oxford Island

OXFORD Island has something for the whole family all year round, but the month of August is simply jam packed with family activities.

On Friday the Northern Ireland Water Bus will be at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre. This double decker bus has been transformed into a state-of-the-art mobile education unit aiming to make children aware of a range of water issues such as the water cycle, water for health, water conservation and water in the third world.

The Water Bus uses a number of educational tools such as displays, games, models, experiments, DVDs and computer facilities as well as its very own super hero 'H2O'. The Water Bus will be at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre for the afternoon.

On Saturday Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland will be on the Island from noon to 3pm with activities including wildflower seed collection and a wildflower walk and talk.

On Sunday join the RSPB from 2pm to 4pm and take part in activities including pond dipping, bird watching and arts and crafts as well as gaining information on the RSPB itself.Saturday, August 14 will see the Council’s Conservation Team taking over for the day with a wide variety of fun, environmental activities including the ever-popular mini beast hunting, pond dipping, guided walks and much much more.

All the above events are free.

Don’t miss out on the Wildlife Hour each day from 2pm to 3pm from Monday, August 16 to Friday, August 20 where you can learn lots of new wildlife skills. Each day you will learn about a different aspect of nature – such as pond life, insect life and birds! Cost is 1.50 per child per day or 5 for the week. Booking is essential.

Finally, don’t forget that the ‘Living Lough – Celebrating Biodiversity’ Exhibition is on in the Discovery Centre throughout the whole of August and with the play park, caf and stunning views of the Lough it’s easy to make a day of it at Oxford Island.
