A real need for Filipino group inNorth West - Mayor

‘Kabalikat’ which means ‘solidarity’ in the Filipino Tagalog language was established as a voluntary group in January 2014 and has since gone from strength to strength locally.

Mayor Brenda Stevenson said: “The Filipino community have been a part of our city for many years now making a welcome contribution in the field of health and other professions.

“The scoping work they have done alongside our Community Relations Team in council show that there is a real need for the group and for structured support to the Filipino Community locally and I am delighted with the success of this event.”

The launch highlighted community needs, issues around racism and access to service provision as well as a positive cultural display of Filipino food, dance and musical performances.

“The Kabalikat group are to be congratulated for their energy and determination in integrating the Filipino community with the wider population,” explained Sue Divin, Community Relations Officer.

“In 6 months they have fundraised for the Typhoon victims in the Phillippines; taken part in the St Patrick’s day carnival; performed in the Guildhall at the NW Migrants Forum Gala Ball; completed Child Protection training; begun strategic planning; delivered educational workshops in schools as part of Community Relations week; and are taking part in the ‘Ubuntu’ Global festival as part of Clipper.

“Having a formal Filipino community group to engage with will also be a great help council and other organisations work together to tackle more serious issues too like racism, equality and inclusion,” she added.
