A26 motorists no longer on verge of despair

MOTORISTS using the busy Crankill Road dual carriageway have been given a safety boost by DRD Roads Service who responded at the weekend to local fears over the danger posed by wildly overgrown grass verges along the busy route.

Both local residents and politicians had highlighted the dangerous state of sections of the central reservation and verges with Roads Service in recent weeks.

At the weekend, Roads Service workers and grass cutting equipment were tasked to the carriageway, bringing the unruly greenery under control.

According to one resident, who contacted this newspaper, the grass in some parts had grown to over one metre tall making it impossible for motorists to see oncoming traffic when they attempted to cross the lanes.

And he highlighted the need for grass in the area to be kept at a low level.

“If this is a cost-cutting exercise to only cut the grass once per year it is a dangerous one and is playing with peoples lives,” he said.

North Antrim Assemblyman Paul Frew, who had raised the issue, said: “I had contacted Roads Service about the dangerous height of the grass a few weeks back which in some cases was up to eyeline of the driver.

“They had promised me that the work would be commenced within the week and they were true to their word.”
