A26 on track for summer 2017 completion

The DUP man asked Minister for Infrastructure, Chris Hazzard for an update on the project, which is costing over £50 million, in a written assembly question last week.

Responding, Minister Hazzard said: “The 5 mile (or 8 kilometre) long A26 dualling scheme between Glarryford and the A44 Drones Road junction forms part of the key transport route between Belfast, the north coast, and some of the provinces most popular tourist attractions.

“The scheme represents a significant £55million investment by the Executive and has provided a welcome boost to the local economy.

“Construction of the scheme commenced in April 2015, and I am very pleased to advise that work has been progressing well – to date, approximately 70% of the works are complete – so we are on programme for completion by summer 2017.

“The majority of earthworks are substantially complete and work is well advanced on all major structures, with six substantially complete. Construction of the new carriageway is also progressing well.

“Once fully completed, this scheme will reduce journey times during peak hours, improve journey time reliability and improve the safety performance along this section of the A26. “

MLA McQuillan commented: “This is very pleasing news. The investment in this stretch of road was long overdue, and I am delighted that things are on track for completion next summer.

“There is no doubt that the work being undertaken will enhance one of the key transport routes to the North Coast. It will also save commuters on their journey time during peak periods.”
