A26 safety review sought following fatal crash

Ballymena SDLP Councillor Declan O’Loan has called for a full safety review of the A26 Lisnevenagh Road between Ballymena and Antrim in the wake of a traffic collision on Tuesday night in which a local woman lost her life.

Cllr O’Loan, who extended sympathy to the family of the deceased, said he came on the scene shortly after the crash.

“There have been many accidents causing death and serious injury on this eight mile stretch of dual carriageway. I believe that it is now time for a full safety review of this road,” he said.

“A review should examine the design of the road and should closely examine the accident history,” Cllr O’Loan said.

Ballymena Councillor Beth Adger who lives not far from the scene of Tuesday night’s fatal road crash said: “It is very, very sad when someone loses their life on the roads and my thoughts and prayers are with the family of this lady at this very sad time.”

Mrs Adger said she has been calling for traffic calming measures in the vicinity for 14 years.

“I feel the crossroads at Woodgreen is a particularly dangerous part of the road. I have been campaigning since I came on to Council for the speed limit on that stretch to be made 30mph,” she said.

Also extending sympathy, Bannside TUV councillor Roy Gillespie said: “I know the family well, I have known them for years and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time.”
