ACADEMY: Investigation launched into Under-17 game

COLERAINE Football Club has confirmed that they are awaiting the outcome of an investigation into an alleged incident at one of the club's academy matches.

Chief Executive John Mairs told Times Sport this week that the club was aware of a confrontation which happened at the Under-17's game against Cookstown last week.

However, Mr Mairs added that because the incident is currently under investigation by the PSNI, the club would not be making any further comment.

"At the moment the situation is under investigation by the authorities including the PSNI and the league," he said.

"As such we are unable to make any further comment. The club will make an official statement once the full facts have been assembled.

"However we are obviously concerned at some of the reports coming from the game and we will be conducting our own investigation into what actually happened."

Times Sport understands that police were called to the game following an altercation between the two teams, which forced the game to be abandoned, and arrests were made.

Meanwhile, on more positive news, Mr Mairs confirmed that the club's bid to secure a 1million grant for the development of the south terrace at The Showgrounds is progressing well.

"We met with Sport NI officials last week again and they are making are the right noises," said John.

"We feel that we are in a very strong position to receive the grant.

"We are now planning to push on with the business case for the development."

On the pitch though development has slowed with Bannsiders boss David Platt revealing his frutration.

"Unfortuntaely things are very quiet and I can't see anything happening over the next few days," he confirmed.

"It's quite similar to last season but hopefully it'll pick up soon, but it's a very frustrating picture at the minute."

Platt also revealed that the Bannsiders could be heading to Scotland for a pre-season tournament in July.

"We are still awaiting confirmation on a couple of things but it's looking good, we should know more next week," he said.
