Accidents HALVED at notorious road

ROADS Service chiefs say the number of reported accidents at the notorious Frosses Road has been slashed by a HALF in the last ten years.

Lynne McElhinney, a Private Secretary in the Department of Regional Development, said: “With regard to ... concern about safety measures, I can advise that because the A26 Frosses Road is a significant arterial route within Roads Service’s Northern Division it is monitored particularly closely.

“Roads Service has advised that a number of accident prevention measures have been established along this route since 2001 and that a reduction accidents, of approximately 50 per cent, has been achieved. In addition the severity of injuries has been reduced, with 82 per cent being classified as slight.

“Undoubtedly, accidents will continue to occur and Roads Service has further advised that 41 per cent of accidents fall into the classification of rear end ‘shunts’.

“To help mitigate against these types of accidents, Road Service has installed high friction surfacing at appropriate locations. In addition, Roads Service will continue to improve this road, with the forthcoming installation of a right turn lane at Crosstagherty Road, Ballymoney.

Roads Service say the are unable to commence construction of a dual-carriageway from Glarryford to the Drones Road junction in their current budget timeframe because schemes from the north-west to Aughnacloy and Belfast to Larne have been prioritised.
