Acclaimed musicans to perform recital

Desmond Hunter, Organ and Sean Woods, Classical Guitar, will feature with all proceeds in aid of The Men’s Hostel Drop In Centre and the Carlisle Road and Limavady Methodist Churches.

He is the recipient of organ-playing awards at Conervatoire, National and International levels and has given numerous solo concerts throughout Europe and in the US and Canada.

He is also Emeritus Professor of music at the University of Ulster and a National Teaching Fellow.

Professor Hunter has received national organ-playing prizes in England and Belgium, and is a former prize-winner at the St Alban’s International Organ Festival.

Notable solo performances include concerts in the Royal Festival Hall, Westminster Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris and Bruges Cathedral.

In 2003, Professor Hunter gave a celebratory organ recital in Antwerp Cathedral to commemorate the centenary of the birth of distinguished Belgian organist and composer, Flor Peeters.

He has also performed organ concertos with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Ulster and RTÉ Symphony Orchestras.

As Professor of Music at UU and Head of the School of Media and Performing Arts, he has played a leading role in establishing the performing arts on the Magee campus.

Sean Woods is considered to be one of the leading lights on the Irish guitar scene and was described by the virtuoso Gabriel Guillen as “one of the most important guitarist in Ireland.”

He established the first guitar orchestra in Ireland and is founder and artistic director of the City of Derry Guitar Festival and has attended master classes with Carlos Bonell, Simon Dinnigan, Gabriel Guillen, John Mills, Allan Neave and John Feeley.

He currently resides in Derry where he teaches at the University of Ulster.
