Accolades for East Antrim coastline

Three East Antrim beaches have been included in the annual Seaside Awards for Northern Ireland.

Carnlough, Ballygally and Browns Bay had to meet tough quality standards to receive the award, issued by the anti-litter charity Tidy NI in association with Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Rural beaches have to meet 15 criteria, including good bathing water quality, while resort beaches such as Downhill, Portrush east strand and Castlerock must meet 30 criteria, including the presence of lifeguards and Excellent EU standards for bathing water.

Presenting the awards, Environment Minister, Alex Attwood said: “Seaside and Blue Flag Awards demonstrate the commitment of our coastal councils and the National Trust to providing clean, safe, well-managed beach facilities for all our coastal visitors. These awards mark our beaches out as first class family destinations.”
