Ace! Community Club link with Age Concern

Steve McCrudden from Age Concern Causeway told The Times that the charity is ‘excited’ about the link up.

Taster sessions will take place in the West Bann Development Centre on March 19 from 11.30 to 1pm and on April 22 from 1.30 to 2.30.

Anyone who is interested in taking part should contact Steve at Age Concern Causeway.

“Exercise has so many benefits apart from the health side of things,” said Steve.

“There are the social and mental benefits which many people forget about.

“These sessions are aimed at introducing our members to the sport of tennis.

“It won’t be full on tennis, the sessions will be graded to the ability of those who attend, and most importantly they will be fun.”

Steven went on: ”We find that many of our members become sedentary after they retire, so projects like this not only promote healthy lifestyles but healthy minds.

“We have around 120 members taking part in our activities every week, so we hope that a few more might sign up to the tennis course and find out what we are all about.”

Steve said that ten members had already shown an interest in the tennis taster sessions.

He added that members of the Age Concern Mens’ Group has already been getting in some practice via a tennis game on the Wii.

The Causeway Community Tennis Club was set up last year.

It aims to get all members of society, young and old, into the sport of tennis.

The Club will be officially launched later this Spring.

A spokesperson for the Club told The Times that they are looking forward to reaching out to communities in the Coleraine area.

“Causeway Community Tennis Club was formed to encourage children and adults from all backgrounds to give the sport of tennis a try.

“Many feel that tennis is an expensive sport, and it often gets the elitist tag - but the Club aims to break down those barriers and get members of the community from all backgrounds involved.

“Tennis coaching can be expensive, but through the Club, we hope to source funding to allow us to bring tennis coaching to communities in the Coleraine area.

“We have a very exciting few months ahead, we really want to reach out to as many communities as we can.”
