To add to the cause for celebration, Stuart’s wife Jane made a special surprise appearance in Portugal to cheer on the family and enjoy the couple’s wedding anniversary.

“It was just a brilliant experience for everyone,” said Stuart. “Having Jane turn up out of the blue was amazing and we had a great week.

“Each round lasted two minutes, with two in the final.

“I won gold in the under 85-kilos grade, with Brandon silver in the individuals and team event.

“Dylan, who is just seven years old, won silver and then finished third in the open class.”

The Gilford family would like to thank Gerald Derry from Annaghmore-based Derry Ltd for sponsorship support.

Special thanks also go to trainer Gary Kelly and everyone in Dungiven’s KFMA gym.

“We all put in a lot of hard work and credit especially to the boys for putting so much into the championships,” said Stuart.

“The support from the rest of the family made a massive difference and the trip was self-financed, with help from Derry Ltd.

“I was out in Spain three years ago with Brandon for the Worlds when he made his debut as a 10-year-old fighter and I won bronze.

“The sport gives the boys so much self-discipline and they love the training and competitions.

“Brandon has reached his Brown belt, Dylan is Yellow belt and I am First Dan.

“Next up is the Irish Open in March 2015.”

Team Northern Ireland finished with 19 golds, 15 silvers and 10 bronze out of 45 competitors.
