Admitted evading tax in relation to 48,000 cigarettes

A 39-year-old man has admitted fraudulent evasion of duty on over 48,000 cigarettes.

He was Li Chai, Dunbarton Street, Gilford.

Chai appeared last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court.

The first charge against him alleges that on August 4 last year he fraudulently evaded duty in relation for 41,980 cigarettes.

He pleaded guilty to this offence and also admitted that between August 4 and October 9 last year he fraudulently evaded duty on 6,800 cigarettes.

A barrister representing the defendant asked for a pre-sentence report.

He added that his client was going to China from May 5 until July 5 but he was a British citizen and would be coming back.

The case was adjourned until August 4 so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.
