The focus was on how family members can support and encourage new mothers.

Sandra Hewitt, Southern Trust breastfeeding co-ordinator explains: “The theme this year is encouraging grandparents to support breastfeeding and it was wonderful to see grandmothers attending the events with their pregnant daughters.”

“Providing your new baby with a healthy start is important and research clearly shows that breastfed babies are healthier than bottlefed babies, need fewer visits to the doctor and have lower risk of ear, chest, stomach and kidney infections, childhood diabetes and obesity.”

Sandra added: “Evidence informs us that brain and eye development is improved for babies who are breastfed. Mothers who breastfeed have lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer.”
