African celebrations underway in Civic Centre

AN exciting new art exhibition has opened at Carrick Civic Centre as part of International Year for People of African Descent celebrations.

Award-winning Greenisland artist Rosetta Jallow is the lead organiser of the initiative which continues through to Saturday (19 November), when there will be special themed events.

Speaking at last weekend’s official opening in the Temporary Gallery at Antrim Street, first citizen Alderman Jim McClurg said: “As Mayor I must say that it is great to see such a fantastically diverse exhibition on display in the Borough. The entertainment and workshops that you may have seen today, will be ongoing in the mall again next Saturday and it gives us all an opportunity to really immerse ourselves in a different culture, try something new and learn more about communities across the world.

“And while we enjoy the entertainment and admire the works of art, lets not forget the most important reason behind the programme of events, and that is to raise funds to support African charities. Rosetta is supporting a number of African charities and as Mayor of Carrickfergus I’m delighted to be able to provide the use of our Council facilities to lend my support to such a worthy cause.”

This Saturday visitors can also enjoy the highly acclaimed ‘Magwere’ from 11am-1pm and children’s art workshops in the Civic Centre.

The event will support charities including Operation Bobbi Bear in South Africa, ABAANA building schools in Uganda, and Church of Christ’s Living Children’s Academy in Gambia.

Displays in the gallery include embroidery and African inspired pottery.
