After the Giro, it’s Bikes for Africa

A wonderful weekend of action capped off a build-up, the intensity and popularity of which has seldom been seen in these parts. Alas, all good things must come to an end and so it is, as the cavalcade dispenses, the coast roads lie quiet - but not for long. Pedal power is replaced by horse power and those with racing in their blood will have revelled in another high octane experience by the time this article makes press.

The mark of how successful an event has been must surely be measured by the legacy it leaves. Certainly, on a national level there will be huge monetary benefits but closer to home, the Rotary Club of Ballycastle hope that they can profit from the aftermath of the Giro. From Belfast to Bushmills and Carnlough to Carrickfergus, the amount of pink bicycles on display was indeed a sight to behold!

In conjunction with our ‘Bikes for Africa’ campaign, members would be most grateful if those no longer required could be donated to the Club as it prepares to have them collected and distributed to youngsters for whom such a piece of equipment means so much.

Aside from the weather and team Garmins’ unfortunate encounter with a sewer cover, the entire event has brought a wonderful sense of community to the province and Rotary would be delighted if this were to translate into something tangible – even tandem!
