Robert Leonard Craig, Antrim Road, Belfast, appeared in the dock last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court after he had been arrested on a warrant.

He was sentenced to two months in prison, suspended for two years, for disorderly behaviour on December 24 last year.

The court heard that police received a report of the defendant being aggressive with members of the public in Bow Street in Lisburn.

Craig was drinking from a bottle of vodka and was walking out into the road, shouting at members of the public.

He then became aggressive towards police. Craig had the vodka bottle in his right hand and made a swinging motion with the bottle.

Police then arrested him and cautioned him for disorderly behaviour. Mr Richard Monteith, representing the accused, said that further up the street police met Craig’s cousin and left the defendant with him.

He explained that his client accepted he was a ‘hopeless alcoholic’ and after completing a 12 week course at Sister Consilio’s just seven days later he was ‘back on the drink’.

Mr Monteith added that Craig faced difficult circumstances and his address was a hostel in Belfast where he had lived for the past four years.

He said it was Christmas Eve and the defendant was very intoxicated.
