Agnew ‘honoured’ to be elected first citizen

Alderman Agnew received the chain of office from outgoing Mayor Victor Robinson at the council’s annual general meeting on Monday night (June 3).

Ahead of the nomination alderman Robinson said he had enjoyed his time as the borough’s first citizen.

He said: “Over the past year the Mill has welcomed over 100,000 visitors which just enhances the role of mayor and shows you the onerous task that it is.”

Alderman Robinson also thanked all the council staff and members who supported him throughout the year.

He added: “There have been many highlights such as the royal visit, the opening of the Newtownabbey Way, which I championed, the Olympics and my mate Michael McKillop’s tremendous achievements as well as the opening of the Ballyduff and Rathfern community centres.

“Not to mention the barbecue at the gate we had for the Christmas dinner,” he joked.

A councillor from each party congratulated Victor on his successful term.

Noreen McClelland said: “I think of all you have done for your charities, the Alzehimer’s Society, Epilepsy Action and Reach. They know you have gone the extra mile and appreciate the support.

“Throughout your period as Mayor you have always put the borough first.”

Each councillor was then presented with a special plaque to mark “what could be the last full council term,” said Alderman Robinson.

Outgoing Deputy Mayor, Fraser Agnew was proposed for the position of Mayor by Councillor John Scott and seconded by a Alderman Paul Girvan.

On taking up the robes and chain of office, he thanked Councillor Robinson for his help and support throughout the previous year.

He added: “I am delighted to be mayor once again after 23 years, I am greatly looking forward to it.”

Following Alderman Agnew’s appointment, Macedon representative Dineen Walker, described as a “great woman”, was duly nominated to the position of deputy mayor.

She said: “I just wish Fraser all the best for the year ahead and hope to be as good a support to him as he was to Victor.”
