Ahoghill explosions: council emergency plan comes into play

A number of Ahoghill residents were evacuated to the local community centre following two explosions in the village in the early hours of Thursday morning.

An Emergency Support Centre was set up at the community centre in response to residents being evacuated from Brookfield Gardens.

Mid and East Borough Council’s emergency response plan came into play with council emergency planning officers receiving a call to open the community centre at 2.20am.

The centre was then opened at 2.30am, ready for any displaced residents arriving.

Council staff attended including two emergency planning officers, a council key holder and the centre caretaker.

Tea and coffee was provided by council staff to residents on arrival, with approximately 20 individuals attending the centre including young people and elderly residents.

By 5.30am, the majority of residents had left to make their way to friends or relatives homes.

At 7.30am, the rest centre was stood down, although it can be re-opened again at the request of the PSNI.
