Aileen McCann charity says 'thanks'

THE Aileen McCann Foundation Cancer Support Group wish to extend sincere thanks to all who came out to their recent annual dance in McLaughlin's Corner Kilrea.

The event held on Friday 26 March had the venue packed to the door.

Chairperson Odhran Darragh said: "It was once again fantastic to see the support for our work growing and this was clear to be seen by the crowd that turned up!

“The evening had another special event which was the beginning of a contribution award within the charity, dedicated to the late Mary Henderson of Rasharkin.

“Mary was our number one supporter, who went to all lengths to support the group, as pointed out on the night Mary was everything, including a life saver, she convinced people who had lost hope to fight and take every treatment offered, most of them today are alive and well thanks to Mary’s advice and support.

“The winners of the award this year are the McGill Family, Kilrea, Coleraine and Cookstown!

“Mary's husband John and family presented the trophy to the McGill family who have raised around 10,000 over the last few years. “Their support have been crucial in keeping our work going."

Rasharkin Variety Act started the evening off with their unforgettable performance of the tale of two Michaels, and we had Saorshe McAuley (Mary's grandaughter) playing the violin, tin whistle and performing Irish Dancing.

“Music was by Joker's Wild, and local man Jimmy Donnelly, Salsa Instructor Tony was on hand to teach us a few moves also.

“The Henderson family also made a couple of cheque presentations on the evening, Mary requested that instead of wreaths she would prefer that donations would be given to Cancer Charities to further their work.

“400 of donations were presented to The Aileen McCann Foundation, and 200 to Bridgewater Suite (Belfast City Hospital's Cancer Centre).

Kilrea Young Farmers came along with a cheque to the value of 450 which they raised in last year’s Belfast City Marathon.

Odhran added: “We thank the Henderson family for their help and support in organising the dance, helping out on the night and for their cheque, and we thank Kilrea Young Farmers also for their contribution which was fantastic and will go far in helping local cancer patients!

“Thanks also to ticket sellers, door staff, McLaughlins Corner and all who contributed to the evening’s success.”

All in all the annual dance has raised approx 3000 pounds for the charity!
