Al-fresco yoga to celebrate Big Flame weekend

While the Olympic countdown continues and sports fans look forward to celebrating the best of international sporting talent, the less energetic of us can also join in the Big Flame Festival weekend of fun this Bank Holiday weekend with a special al-fresco yoga event.

People of all ages and abilities are being invited to limber up and join in a mass Yoga class at St Columb’s Park on Monday morning (June 4) ahead of the much anticipated arrival of the London 2012 OTR.

Well known local yoga instructor John Bell will lead the class, and said he was looking forward to an energizing but relaxed event. “The whole idea behind yoga is union - bringing people together in a celebration of mind, body and spirit,” he explained. “And the event is aimed at bringing people from across the city together, so yoga is the perfect way to do this. Everyone is welcome to come along, no matter what age, and we’re encouraging people to bring their children and allow them to join in the fun as well.”

And John won’t be expecting you to know your lotus position from your downward dog. “It’s an introduction to yoga really, and it’s all about what yoga means, so we’re not expecting people to have any previous experience,” he said. “It’s all about getting outside and having a bit of craic, so I really hope people will come along and join in. And if we get the weather for it, it will be a great way to get a bit of fresh air and enjoy the park.”

The session runs between 11am and 12noon at St Columb’s Park and the event is organized in support of the Northlands Centre. The event is one of a series of family friendly initiatives organised by the Council as part of the Big Flame Festival weekend celebrations.

This will culminate in a spectacular Olympic Carnival Parade led by our local Olympic heroes, which kicks off a special evening of celebrations at St Columb’s Park Stadium. Entry for the evening is by ticket only, and tickets are available free from the Millennium Forum Box Office on 02871 264455.
