“I want to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and raise awareness of the benefits of regular exercise and maintaining a sensible weight, which can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer,” said Alan, who works for Alliance Boots in Belfast.

“As a pharmacist, a key part of our role is empowering our patients to make healthy decisions for themselves. Until recently I had not undertaken significant levels of exercise, and had not cycled since I was a child. I realised this had to change, and as a healthcare professional I had to ‘practice what I preached’ so to speak. I am keen to show my patients and others that it is possible to find time to improve your health, even when time appears at a premium.”
