Alarm bells sound after church attacked ahead of wedding

THE shutters almost came down a couple's big day after the latest in a series of attacks at Carrickfergus Baptist Church.

When Pastor Lindsay Allen arrived at 9.30am on Saturday to check everything was in order for a wedding later that morning, he discovered the building had again been vandalised

On this occasion vandals had set fire to a light and the resulting damage had burnt out the electrical circuit to the steel security door so that it could not be opened.

“We have had to make the church so burglar proof that there was no other way of getting in and at one point I wondered whether we were going to have to phone the bride and postpone the wedding,” said Pastor Allen.

“Fortunately an emergency phone call to the supplier of the steel shutters brought help and with the assistance of a couple of deacons in the church we managed to open the shutter manually and repair the electrics in time for the wedding to take place.”

Over the past few years the church has spent more than 5000 on repairs and anti-vandalism measures.
