Alcohol seizures down - report

Ballymoney police have reduced the number of seizures of alcohol under the Confiscation of Alcohol (Young Persons) Act 1997.

The news was revealed during a recent District Policing Partnership meeting held at Riada House.

From April to March 2009/2010 there were 24 reported incidents compared to 20 during April to March 2010/2011 - a reduction of four.

Officers also increased the number of referrals to the Youth Diversion Officer. From April to March 2009/2010 there were 82 referrals compared to 241 during April to March 2010/2011 - an increase of 159.

Finally the number of referrals to council regarding breach of alcohol related bye laws also increase from none to three.

In response Chief Inspector John Magill explained: “Police officers have been focused on areas where we have received reports of antisocial behaviour and have taken robust action regarding inappropriate behaviour or use of alcohol.

“Where young persons come to the attention of Police reports are forwarded to the Youth Diversion Officer. Parents are then contacted regarding the matter.”
